Who are we?

We are a couple of engineers from Boulder, CO who decided to ditch the rat race and chase our dreams…. selling all of our possessions and buying a small sailboat and cruising full time.

This blog will document the highs and lows and (many, many) lessons learned as we make the switch to a smaller, more sustainable life on the water.

We’re not completely new to wanderlust…. we thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail for our honeymoon in 1997, took a year off to travel the world in 2002, climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, and lived in Harrogate, UK for four years. We joke that each time we take “the trip of a lifetime” we add to our bucket list of travel dreams, and need to live several lifetimes more.

Mike

Mike is the Captain of S/V Sanitas, and chief engineer. He’s a gear-head, researching every device and item of equipment to make sure we’ve got the boat outfitted comfortably and safely for our journey. When on land, he loves mountain biking, snowboarding, and eating buffalo wings.

Jenn

Jenn is first mate, social media coordinator, cheerleader, and chief cook and bottle washer. She also keeps Mike on track when he confuses east and west again. Her goal is to eventually get Sanitas organized and feeling like a home. On land, Jenn enjoys running, cycling, reading, and exploring. She also wants a kitten.

S/V Sanitas

Sanitas is a 37 foot Pacific Seacraft sailboat, built in 1994. She has lived on the Great Lakes, in the Chesapeake Bay, and cruised the Caribbean. She’s a classy lady with a great deal of sailing experience, and is truly a blue water capable craft. We hope that she will keep us safe even when we are too inexperienced to know how to keep ourselves safe.Sanitas means “healthy…. both physically and mentally” and we hope to achieve that peace of mind and sanity in our new lives on the water. Our previous home in Boulder was at the base of Mount Sanitas it was our favorite local hiking trail. So her name is a welcome link to memories of our old lives!
